Making Homemade Paprika

Are you looking for something new to try with an overabundance of peppers? Experimenting with making paprika is a great use of peppers and it adds great flavor to home cooked meals. My husband wanted to grow paprika and discovered through research that paprika can be made with any peppers. This was all he needed to know to want to make his own. It takes many peppers, but since we have an excess of them, it works out great for us.

We grow a variety of peppers in our garden and when making our own paprika, we experiment with combining different varieties. The peppers that we have used for paprika include:

Red Skin (mild flavor)
Anaheim (mild spice)
California Wonder (sweet)
Big Bertha (very sweet)
Banana Peppers (mild)


My husband first dehydrates the peppers with a dehydrator. Once the peppers are dehydrated, we use a small coffee grinder to mix and grind the peppers. We experiment with different mixes to create different flavors.  When done, we put it in a jar and it is ready to use. I use paprika in most of my dishes.

The latest batch of paprika that we made was a combination of Red Skin and Big Bertha peppers. I used it right away with some chicken sautéed in coconut oil and just a little Himalayan Pink Salt. The flavor was wonderful. For some it may not be worth it to try to make your own paprika, but since we have an overabundance of peppers and we like to experiment, it is well worth it for us. We love the flavor of our homegrown paprika. If you are looking for something interesting to try with a surplus of peppers, homemade paprika can provide a great culinary adventure.
